What the critics say

95 VMVinous, Joaquin Hidalgo, 28-07-2026

The 2002 Almaviva (67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc) was aged 18 months in French oak. It offers a composed nose of red and black fruit, confit, cedar and fine wood. Slightly indulgent, the palate is structured yet controlled, with fine tannins and moderate grip, and it finishes with black fruit and a hint of thyme. For a 2002, it remains in impeccable condition, showing delicate maturity while retaining lively tannins. A great vintage and a well-executed, classically built wine.

2002 was not considered a good vintage because there was some rain farther south. But, in Puente Alto, where the vineyards for the 2002 Almaviva are, it was pretty "normal," and they didn't have the rains in March. It was a warm year, without excess. The wine is quite classical, it has evolved nicely, the palate is still pretty lively and balanced, with developed aromas. It is harmonious and in no danger of going down any time soon. This time they only had Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere and Cabernet Franc (67%, 29% and 4%, respectively). Merlot and Petit Verdot came later. It turns spicier in the glass, with even some curry aromas.
