Phillip Jones planted at Leongatha in 1979 and spent three decades proving that Gippsland could make Pinot Noir of real seriousness, at yields most growers would consider a mistake. The vineyards are dry farmed and biodynamically managed, the winemaking is deliberately minimal, and very little of it ever leaves Australia. What reaches Britain comes through us.

A sense of place

The vineyards sit in South Gippsland, which is cold, marginal and a long way from anywhere fashionable. That is rather the point. Cool sites and very low yields give wines of tension and texture rather than weight, and they are built to last. Jones chose the place because it was difficult, and the wines have been arguing his case ever since.

In the vineyard

Dry farmed and biodynamically managed, with yields kept exceptionally low. None of that is a marketing position. It is the reason the fruit arrives with the concentration the wines need, and the reason there is never very much of it.

In the cellar

Wild ferments, no filtration, minimal sulphur. The winemaking is minimalist by design, so what you taste is the site and the season rather than a house style laid over the top. The wines are vibrant young and hold their shape for decades.

Allocation

Each vintage arrives in small quantity and is spoken for quickly. If you would like a standing allocation, or you are after a particular cuvee, vintage or format, write to me and I will tell you what is actually in the warehouse.
