What the critics say

95 VMVinous, Neal Martin, 01-07-2020

The 1928 Petrus represents the most ancient château-bottling that I have tasted. At this time it was owned by the redoubtable Mme Loubat, but predates any involvement of Jean-Pierre Moueix. While the subsequent 1897 is admittedly a little anonymous, I find this 1928 quite ethereal and bearing more semblance to the Petrus we recognise today. It appears commensurate with its age. It has a quite ethereal bouquet that is initially discrete but unfolds with gentle, unassuming scents of black truffle and hickory, becoming slightly medicinal with time in the glass. The palate is built around a mellow sweet core of fruit with what you might describe as “haunting” balance. This is utterly refined. It is not a spectacular Pomerol, perhaps almost understated in style, but then it surprisingly develops a Rhône-like feral element right on the finish. What a beautiful ancient Pomerol, one that I am unlikely to ever taste again. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at Hide restaurant in London.
