A 2005 Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Im Weingebirge is demure in the nose, but loads the palate with succulent, melony fruit, Sauvignon-like suggestions of black currant and herbs, and a myriad of mineral nuances. Considerable richness and density go hand in hand with delicacy of touch and refinement of flavors in the best 2005 manner. Melon, wet stone, herb, and pepper figure in a long finish. There will be no Im Weingebirge Smaragd this year. Also recommended: 2005 Gruner Veltliner Steinfeder (not available; 85), 2005 Riesling Federspiel Vom Stein ($36.00; 85+?).
