What the critics say

94 WAWine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez, 30-11-2022

The 2019 Un Lugar en Los Andes Malbec is from the joint venture between Sebastián Zuccardi and his friend, Walter Scibilia, a gaucho that has a large property in San Pablo, Estancia San, where he has some vines planted at 1,700 meters in altitude, the highest productive vineyard in the Valle de Uco. The Malbec was also planted in 2004, but they planted some more vines in 2018 and 2019 that went into production in 2022. It fermented with 30% to 50% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in 500-liter oak barrels where it matured for around 10 months. It has intense aromas that I associate with high altitude—violets and ripe cherries—and is varietal and pure, with the austere palate and fine tannins that seem to be Zucccardi's signature. There are only 590 bottles that were filled in June 2020.

The 2019 Malbec Un Lugar en los Andes opens with notes of wild herbs—carqueja, thyme and sage—evoking the mountain landscape. The fruit is restrained, leaning toward black fruit. It is a primary, expressive and delicate Malbec, with medium weight and a fresh profile. The finish lingers with herbal notes, emphasizing its high-altitude identity.
