What the critics say

91 WAWine Advocate, Mark Squires, 31-07-2020

The 2015 VV'47 is a field blend from old vines (the "VV'47" references Vertical Vineyard and the 1947 origin of the vineyard). This is a single-parcel wine from the top of the quinta, "the oldest vertical vineyard planted in the Douro," the winery says. It was aged for 12 months in used French oak and comes in at 14% alcohol. Elegantly crafted and nicely focused, this shows its wood a bit, but it also has fine fruit. It is a bit understated in terms of both concentration and expression of fruit, though. The structure is somewhat better. The most expensive wine in the group, this performs beautifully, but I'd say the Reserva offers far more bang for the buck and is a better wine. The ideas are great—including the admirable mid-palate finesse—but the question here will be whether this can improve enough in the cellar to acquire more distinction. It might, but let's be conservative just now.
