What the critics say
93 VMVinous, Neal Martin, 23-12-2024
The 1948 Cos d’Estournel appears more mature in the glass than either the 1947 or 1949. It remains fresh but there is little fruit remaining: woodbine, sandalwood, pressed flowers and an antique mahogany bureau. The palate is actually better than the nose. Here there is much more fruit than I anticipate, a perfect bead of acidity and incredible detail towards the finish. The harmony and effortlessness here, at least on the palate is extraordinary - it is just the aromatics that have faded over time. My overall score is an injustice to the palate and who knows, maybe another bottle would show aromatics that are more deserving? Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical at the property.
