What the critics say
91 VMVinous, Neal Martin, 01-10-2023
The 1920 Siran, a vintage I have not encountered previously, has a clear, pale brick hue with wide degradation on the rim. The nose is light and quite Burgundian in style. There are remnants of leather, sandalwood and pressed rose petals, yet compared to the handful of other wines tasted from the vintage, it does feel a little enervated by time. The palate is bitter and citric on the entry. Light grip but somewhat hollow on the mid-palate with an initially austere finish. But hold the front page…it magically seems to gain substance after 20 minutes and manifests irresistible, lightly spiced, clove-tinged red fruit from nowhere! Mercurial as ever, this 103-year-old Margaux undergoes a Lazarus-like resurrection in the glass. Tasted at the Siran Twenties vertical at the château.
