What the critics say

93 WAWine Advocate, Robert Parker, 01-01-1998

The 1945 was magnificent with a stupendous oriental spice bouquet and smashing concentration. Last tasted 4/90.

The 1945 Pontet-Canet was bottled by a Libourne-based merchant called Saby & Co and comes from a recently acquired case in Bordeaux. It has a rustic nose, quite ferrous in style but still remarkably youthful for its age, not unlike a 1961 with those marine-like/seaweed scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly dry tannin. This is stocky and still dense considering its age. Though it lacks the breeding of the top tier 1945s it is still a thoroughly enjoyable Pauillac. I would not decant this but pour straight from the bottle. Tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux.
