What the critics say

94 VMVinous, Neal Martin, 01-02-2018

The 1959 Léoville-Barton has a straightforward bouquet with cedar and antique bureau aromas infusing the decayed red fruit, turning more floral (rose petal) for a time before developing peaty scents. The palate is medium-bodied with rather coarse tannin and yet there is a fine line of acidity. This Barton has a gentle personality, a Saint Julien not wishing to create any fuss but still determined to give as much pleasure as possible. It has faded for sure, yet there is still something compelling about this wine.

94 WAWine Advocate, Robert Parker, 31-10-1994

Tasted 3 Times With Consistent Notes Leoville-Barton had a strong decade from the late forties through the fifties. The powerhouse 1959 is fully mature, but exhibits no signs of fading. It is large-scaled and muscular, with a huge, cedary, earthy, black fruit-scented nose, gobs of glycerin and alcohol, and a heady, spicy finish with some noticeable tannin. Will the 1982 be its contemporary counterpart?
