What the critics say
72 WAWine Advocate, Robert Parker, 01-01-1998
For a vintage that many considered to be one of the two worst in the post-World War II era, La Mission-Haut-Brion certainly turned out to be a pleasant wine. There is nothing vegetal or diluted about the cedary, spicy, smoky, fruity, yet somewhat chaptalized bouquet. On the palate, the wine exhibits surprising body and vibrant fruit, but has a hot, alcoholic finish. After several minutes in the glass, it fades completely. For the vintage, one would have to consider this a major success. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 1/89.

The 1963 La Mission Haut-Brion tries and fails to disguise the fact that this was a hideous, rain-drenched growing season. It reeks and tastes of rot. This is a wine with no redeeming features and best avoided. The score is academic. Tasted at the La Mission Haut-Brion dinner in London.
