What the critics say

100 VMVinous, Neal Martin, 01-07-2019

The 1955 l’Eglise-Clinet was the first vintage under the present name but more importantly, the magnum opened by Denis Durantou remains not just one of the greatest Pomerols that I have ever tasted, but one of the greatest wines. Clear in color with little ageing on the rim, it has an utterly bewitching crystalline bouquet: pure red berry fruit, crushed stone, Vervane tea and a dewy pasture-like aromas. You just find it difficult to encapsulate into words. Captivating. The palate is perfection. Some of the finest tannins that I have encountered on a Right Bank of this age combined with stunning focus, chiseled tannic structure with precision on the finish that is breathtaking. Crushed stone and a touch of game towards the finish might give away its age, otherwise this is a monumental and profound Pomerol that I am unlikely to ever taste again. Tasting note taken from the Pomerol book by Neal Martin.
