What the critics say

Though I have tasted more vintages of Gruaud Larose than any other, I had not encountered the 1947 Gruaud Larose until Jordi's epic 1947 dinner in 2013. The second encounter was a decade later in Hong Kong, confirming this was a superb postwar Saint-Julien. This displays wide bricking on the rim. The nose is fragrant and floral with rosehip, brambly red fruit, tangerine and a light tang of kelp. The palate is framed by light tannins, a pretty Saint-Julien that successfully shrugs off the infamous heat of that vintage and evidences a controlled fermentation when others "over-boiled" the ferment that year. It is elegant on the finish with a touch of black pepper and orange rind that just waltzes along nicely in its old age. Tasted at the "Koala's Old Claret Dinner" in Hong Kong.
