What the critics say
90 VMVinous, Neal Martin, 01-05-2021
The 1959 Grand Mayne shows commensurate bricking on the rim given its age. It has a fragrant bouquet, not powerful, but certainly well defined. Vestiges of red fruit, desiccated orange peel, damp undergrowth and wilted rose petals blossom from the glass, so pretty and charming, still evincing this great growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity. This feels very cohesive yet slightly powdery in texture with ample freshness and vitality towards the piquant finish. Whilst it does not rank among the greatest 1959 Saint-Émilion wines that I have tasted, this is undeniably sensual and charming, perhaps now in its dotage, staying classy and refined. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property.
