What the critics say

91 WAWine Advocate, Robert Parker, 01-01-2003

A very successful vintage for Ausone, this wine seems to be close to full maturity, but knowing the history of this chateau, it is not unforeseen that it can last another 50 or more years. The wine shows a dark garnet color with considerable amber at the edge. Sweet notes of fruitcake, spice box, underbrush, licorice, and jammy red and black fruits tumble from the glass. The wine is medium-bodied, round, nearly opulent by the standards of this chateau, with a spicy, somewhat pinched finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025+. Last tasted, 1/03.

The 1983 Ausone is a wine that I have tasted three times before and it always pales against the Cheval Blanc. It has a light, fully mature nose: oxtail, molasses, tobacco and Earl Grey aromas but little in the way of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, foursquare and rather dour, an Ausone with the charm of an ugly power station. It should have aspired to something greater than this. If it were a colour, it would be beige. Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London.
