Opaque ruby. Powerful red and dark berry and floral pastille scents, along with suggestions of licorice, vanilla and pipe tobacco. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering juicy black raspberry, cherry liqueur and mocha flavors sharpened by a jolt of zesty minerality. In a modern style, for sure, delivering solid closing thrust and smooth, well-knit tannins that lend shape and gentle grip to persistent, oak-spiced berry preserve flavors.

The 2010 Altanza Reserva Especial is pure Tempranillo with some aromas of leather and cured meat, ripe black fruit and something organic/earthy. The palate is medium-bodied, polished, showing fine tannins and ripe flavors. The smoky bacon turns more animal with time in the glass, so those aromas might grow in the bottle. I'd drink it sooner rather than later. 20,000 bottles.
