Rhône

The Rhône runs from Lyon to Avignon and divides in two. In the north, Syrah on its own, planted on granite terraces steep enough to be worked by hand. In the south, Grenache leading a blend of up to thirteen grapes on stones and garrigue. Two climates, two soils, and little in common beyond the river.

The grapes are Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne.

The northern Rhône is one of France's most singular wine landscapes — narrow terraced vineyards carved from granite, where Syrah produces wines of uncommon precision and longevity. Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Cornas each offer a distinct expression of the grape, from the perfumed elegance of Ampuis to the iron-fisted structure of Cornas.

The southern Rhône is a broader, warmer world. Châteauneuf-du-Pape anchors a region of remarkable diversity, where Grenache-led blends absorb the heat of the Mistral-swept plateau to produce wines of warmth, spice, and considerable age-worthiness. Gigondas and Vacqueyras offer compelling alternatives at a fraction of the price.
