Bordeaux

Bordeaux is the reference point against which every other fine wine region is measured. Its classification system, established in 1855 and largely unchanged since, remains the most recognised quality hierarchy in the world — not because it is perfect, but because the estates at its summit have, vintage after vintage, justified the ranking.

The Left Bank runs from the Médoc south through Graves and Pessac-Léognan. Here Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, producing wines of structure and longevity — Pauillac above all, home to three of the five First Growths. The Right Bank, centred on Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, is Merlot country: rounder, earlier to open, no less serious at the top.

Sauternes stands apart. The sweet wines of this small appellation, made from botrytised Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, are among the longest-lived bottles in existence. Château d'Yquem, the only Premier Cru Supérieur, is in a category of one.
